WordPress er et publiseringssystem for nettsteder (også kalt innholdsstyringssystem (engelsk content management system)) skrevet i PHP og som benytter seg av en MySQL-database. WordPress brukes for å administrere innhold som oppdateres ofte, spesielt blogger. Den er distribuert under GNU General Public License og er fritt tilgjengelig.

WordPress er verdens mest brukte publiseringssystem.[trenger referanse] Noen store aktører i Norge som bruker WordPress er Brønnøysundregistrene, Grieg-gruppen, Norad og Glasmagasinet.

Navnet WordPress ble foreslått av Christine Selleck, en venn av hovedutvikler Matthew Mullenweg. WordPress er den offisielle etterfølgeren til b2/cafelog.

Versjon 3.0 ble utgitt i juni 2010 og var en av de største utgivelsene i WordPress sin historie. Versjon 3.0 smeltet sammen WordPress MU (MultiUser) og «vanlig» WordPress til en enkeltutgave. WordPress.com bruker samme versjon som det er mulig å laste ned fra WordPress.org, men med en rekke tilpasninger og ekstrafunksjoner.

WordPress-utgivelser blir oppkalt etter kjente jazzmusikere (f.eks. Mingus). Versjon 1.5 som ble utgitt i midten av februar 2005 – kalt «Strayhorn» etter Billy Strayhorn – kom med en rekke nye egenskaper. En av disse var muligheten til å administrere statiske sider. Dette gjør det mulig å lage og administrere innholdssider utenfor den vanlige bloggkronologien. About WordPress.org

On this site you can download and install a software script called WordPress. To do this you need a web host who meets the minimum requirements and a little time. WordPress is completely customizable and can be used for almost anything. There is also a service called WordPress.com which lets you get started with a new and free WordPress-based blog in seconds, but varies in several ways and is less flexible than the WordPress you download and install yourself.

Here’s the quick version of the instructions for those who are already comfortable with performing such installations. More detailed instructions follow.

If you are not comfortable with renaming files, step 3 is optional and you can skip it as the install program will create the wp-config.php file for you.

Download and unzip the WordPress package if you haven’t already.
Create a database for WordPress on your web server, as well as a MySQL (or MariaDB) user who has all privileges for accessing and modifying it.
(Optional) Find and rename wp-config-sample.php to wp-config.php, then edit the file (see Editing wp-config.php) and add your database information.
Upload the WordPress files to the desired location on your web server:If you want to integrate WordPress into the root of your domain (e.g. http://example.com/), move or upload all contents of the unzipped WordPress directory (excluding the WordPress directory itself) into the root directory of your web server.
If you want to have your WordPress installation in its own subdirectory on your website (e.g. http://example.com/blog/), create the blog directory on your server and upload the contents of the unzipped WordPress package to the directory via FTP.
Note: If your FTP client has an option to convert file names to lower case, make sure it’s disabled.
Run the WordPress installation script by accessing the URL in a web browser. This should be the URL where you uploaded the WordPress files.If you installed WordPress in the root directory, you should visit: http://example.com/
If you installed WordPress in its own subdirectory called blog, for example, you should visit: http://example.com/blog/
